Update: The student posted this question on Reddit and found an answer! It seems the jacket design was inspired by a sketchbook of Kawanabe Kyosai (held by the Kawanabe Kyosai Memorial Museum) rather than a direct copy of his work. The museum’s website is down, but if you’re curious, it’s archived on the Wayback Machine:

Many thanks to those who responded!

Best wishes,

Subject: Kawanabe Kyosai - woman reading - image identification

Hello,

A student is looking for the original art work used in this jacket by Yohji Yamamoto:

https://theshopyohjiyamamoto.com/shop/g/gGN-C03-853-1-03/

The original artist seems to be Kawanabe Kyosai or possibly his daughter Kawanabe Kyosui. Although I found many similar images, I didn’t have any luck finding the original. I am hoping someone on the list might recognize the woman reading and help identify the original.

Many thanks in advance!

Megan
