Good afternoon.

I am working on a collection inventory of the artists' book collection at
my institution and have recently identified some artists' books in the
general circulating collection that I plan to transfer to special
collections. Some of these books were inexpensive paperbacks when purchased
(ex. Ed Rushca's books) and have since been placed in library bindings. Is
there any protocol for whether to remove these books from their library
bindings in an attempt to restore them to their original state (or closer
to it)? I am a preservation specialist and could remove them, but they
would likely still show evidence of having been in library bindings. Have
you encountered this issue or do you have thoughts about whether to leave
them in the bindings or not?

Thank you for any help or advice you may have.

Best,
Suzanne
