Thank you to everyone that responded, and sharing what you are doing in your libraries. We likely aren't launching drop-in hours until the Fall semester, so there is time to plan!

I see several of you are using Zoom, but unfortunately that isn't an option for us at the University of Waterloo. We have been asked not to us it because of security concerns.

I'll bring all your comments to my colleagues in the library and brainstorm. I'll provide an update to both listservs (I posted the same questions to AASL-L and ARLIS-L) once I know what we are doing for Fall.

Thank you again,

Good morning,

I found the "Drop-in Art & Architecture Library Zoom" worked well when we went virtual. When someone enters the waiting room, if I don't already have the meeting open, I receive an email alerting 'someone is waiting'. The meeting is also restricted to @nyit.edu email. We alerted faculty that students can drop-in on Zoom during studio hours, and 'common hour'.

We've been wondering about a more specific part of this idea. We already have a very robust chat service, as do so many places, and we still have not decided what library services will look like in the Fall even though we know now that courses will be resident. But in our small Architecture & Landscape Architecture Library, which is in the building with those studios, students and faculty are accustomed to popping into the library very spontaneously, often as part of teacher-directed studio work. A few courses will be fully online and some will be online for selected sessions (in order to create more building space for studios), but at Penn State ALL courses will be online after Thanksgiving.

We are wondering about running a Zoom "library desk" of some sort, especially during the all-online end of the semester. Literally keeping a Zoom meeting open on a set schedule in hopes of visitors, and targeting the advertising toward the classes that would normally be held in the studio building. The idea is to simulate that spontaneous type of use. Since budgets, availability of staff, collection handling rules, and practically everything else are still unknown, this is still only an idea.

Did anybody try something like this in the Spring semester?

Thanks,

Henry Pisciotta

Hi Evan,

I have been considering offering this service, using a couple blocks of time per week. Like afternoon hours on Mondays and morning hours on Thursdays or something to spread it around the week.

The summer is much lighter in course load, but I am wondering if faculty would use it?!

Anyhow, I am happy to share info.

If anyone has already done this, I too would love to hear about your experiences.

Thanks,

Cindy

Hi Everyone,

The architecture library I manage, as well as all libraries at the University of Waterloo have been physically closed since mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All classes at the School of Architecture that I support are going to be online in the Fall semester, so likely my library will not reopen to the public until 2021.

We've extended chat hours, are offering curbside pick-up at our main branches (and soon at the Musagetes Library), moving all library instruction to online, and I'm doing reference via email, and research consultations through Skype, MS Teams, et cetera.

One think we haven't been able to do is replicate the ease of coming to the reference desk, so we are considering offering online live drop-in hours at Musagetes.

Are any other architecture libraries doing this? If so, how many hours are you offering per week or day? How are you staffing this? Have you experienced anything unexpected? Any words of advice?

Thanks so much to anyone who responds. I also recommend responding to all of AASL-L instead of just emailing me privately. I'm sure I'm not the only academic librarian considering doing something similar.

I acknowledge that I live and work on the traditional territory of ýthe Neutral, Anishnaabeg, and Haudenosaunee peoples who are still under colonial rule. The Musagetes Library, and the University of Waterloo are situated on the Haldimand Tract, which the British granted to the Six Nations in 1784 as compensation for their alliance during the American Revolution and for the loss of their traditional territory. Although it is important to acknowledge the land and broken treaties, we need to each engage in concrete actions, or else acknowledgements are merely token gestures rather than a meaningful practice. We cannot change the past, but we can continue to share in the work of healing and decolonization, respectfully following the leadership of Indigenous communities and leaders.
