Hi all,

I’m excited to share a preview of the very-nearly-complete Artist Files Revealed: International Directory of Artist Files Collections.

Using open source components, chiefly the Python-based Django web framework, I hope I was successful in building a directory experience that assists researchers find and use these incredible collections. This iteration of the directory, in addition to providing access to institutional collections, allows personal collectors and dealers to describe their files. It offers, among other options, access via collection location, extensive subject access, special formats, and access via technical information such as cataloging systems. It also allows users to upload images of their collections. Version 1.0 focuses on browsing options, and I plan to offer searching by keyword, etc., later.

The YouTube video below whips through the site pretty quickly. Sorry about that!

It’s important to note that at this stage of the project, it only exists on my Mac (and GitHub). I’ll be working with the Artist Files SIG leaders and ARLIS/NA to figure out hosting options. Also, I have loaded a number of test collections from various institutions. Thanks to those folks who have contributed to this test data.

A few other notes:

I’m ready/willing to answer any questions. I’m also open to working with anyone who wants to submit additional test data.
