Hi Evan,

I manage several archival collections of prominent local artists and
architects, so my reopening issues are different. Our library closed the
third week of March with only chat, email and phone reference until June
when we began a grab and go service at our library. A portion of our first
floor has remained open for the duration since it is one of two main
computer labs on campus.

Before our library closed, I offered walk-in reference one morning and one
afternoon a week and other times M-F by appointment (9am to noon and 1 to
4pm). Our library collections will remain closed through the fall, but it
sounds like it will be open for study space.

I have a PhD candidate writing a biography based on a collection of artist
papers I manage. Fortunately, she started researching in the collection
over a year ago and had gone through most of the books and papers and was
ready to begin writing her dissertation. I have been able to go in and look
things up and scan or take snapshots of materials and send them via email.
But, she has been eager to get back into the diaries to verify points in
her notes. I have obtained permission to escort her to the reading room for
research beginning July 1 (our state's stay at home orders end tomorrow). I
have another graduate student who needs access to a preservation
architect's collection for her practicum. Most others waiting are local
community users and our campus is closed to the public. I plan to offer
in-person access to University of Hawaii users on an appointment only
basis, with no more than one appointment a day since my reading room is
small. Handwashing, masks and social distancing will be required as well as
cleaning the area and isolating materials for at least three days after use.

I'm guessing your drop in reference would be direct to a subject
specialist, vs chat where maybe someone else is answering and referring
patrons? I have seen my inquiries drop significantly, but have been able to
provide support by phone, email and zoom - especially emails since I
usually respond as they come in.

Apologies for what turned out to be a lengthy reply!
Stay safe,
Malia
