Curator of the Archive of Documentary Arts, Duke University Libraries- Durham, NC

The Duke University Libraries seek a dynamic leader to head its Archive of Documentary Arts located in the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library.

Responsible for guiding and overseeing the growth of research collections related to documentary photography, documentary film, and in other media, the Curator will have a contagious passion for documentary arts and the ability to articulate the history of the field and its meaning to a wide variety of audiences. This role requires creativity and initiative as well as an understanding of research methods and the evolution of the documentary endeavor in various formats. It involves interaction with a world-class faculty passionate about their research and teaching, with library staff and curators, and collaboration with colleagues at archives and museums nationally and worldwide.

The Curator of the Archive of Documentary Arts will be skilled at working with artists and filmmakers and will understand their methods of work and the formats that they employ. The Curator will work closely with the staff of Center for Documentary Studies at Duke to facilitate regular campus exhibits, lectures, and public programs. The Curator will collaborate with reference, cataloging, conservation, and digitization staff in the Library, and will lead efforts to identify, analyze, and establish best practices. In partnership with library staff, campus units, and the creators whose work is preserved in the Archive, the Curator will work to build a national audience for the collections and to articulate Duke’s distinctive vision.
