Thomas J. Watson Library in The Metropolitan Museum of Art is pleased to announce an opening for the position of Library Associate, Asian Resources. This part-time position is a special opportunity to contribute to the success of an innovative and productive art library at a world-class museum while learning and applying new skills.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
As a member of Watson Library’s Chinese Japanese Korean (CJK) team, responsibilities include searching, ordering, receiving, and cataloging of CJK materials, and providing accurate and timely processing of CJK material according to current national standards and best practices. This position directly supports the Asian Art Department curators’ work on the development and research for exhibitions and publications by maintaining the Asian Art Library and working on projects to uphold its effective organization. In addition, this role responds to requests by Asian Art Department curators and staff to provide accessible resources and materials that further their work and scholarship. This includes processing new acquisitions, preparing books to be sent offsite, and participating in the withdrawal of material from the collection.  

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

·         Directly supports the Asian Art Department curators in exhibition- and publications-related research and scholarship through the acquisition of resources and maintenance of the Asian Art Library and Watson

·         Responsible for organization and maintenance of the Asian Art Library, including shelfing, in-house circulation and inventory control, and the transfer of Asian Art auction catalogs and gift books to Watson

·         Searches, orders and receives CJK materials for Watson Library and Asian Art Library; performs copy cataloging and monitors quality of vendor-provided cataloging

·         Processes CJK research material including periodicals; analyzes usage to recommend conversion of print subscriptions to online

·         Processes book gifts by donors and institutions to the library collection

·         Serves as a member of the mailroom team and assists with the receipt and processing of incoming material

·         Assists with collection management including offsite processing, withdrawals, and managing the appropriate disposition of duplicate auction catalogs and other material.  

·         Other related duties


REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience and Skills:

·         Library experience required

·         Experience using an integrated library system (preferably Sierra) required

·         Experience with OCLC Connexion Client preferred

·         Ability to do detailed work accurately required

·         Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team based environment required

·         Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem solving skills required

·         Initiative, flexibility, and a strong service orientation required

·         Experience using other library-related software preferred

 

Knowledge and Education:

·         Knowledge of Chinese language and Pinyin Romanization required; familiarity with Japanese and Korean preferred

·         Knowledge of art history and/or related fields required

·         Knowledge of RDA/AACR2, LC Classification, and MARC21 required
