The Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Art Libraries Society of North America is pleased to announce the recipients of its travel awards for 2020.The awards are offered for chapter members to engage in professional development by attending conferences and meetings organized by the Society and the Chapter.

WALRC AWARD

 

The Washington Art Library Resources Committee Award for 2020 is awarded to Anna Boutin-Cooper, Research & Visual Arts Librarian, Shadek-Fackenthal Library, Franklin & Marshall College. She is the first recipient of this new award.  Ms. Boutin-Cooper is the co-moderator of the Teaching Special Interest Group and will be presenting a paper on a session she organized titled “ Reimaging the Frame: Connecting Art to the Framework in Theory and Practice.” She will also be co-facilitating a workshop for new teachers “teaching in the Art Library: From Pedagogy to Praxis” in addition to presenting a poster session titled “Oral History as Care: Preserving Memories and Maintaining Stakeholder Relationships” based on a project with the artist Bill Hutson.

 

 

The WALRC Award is given to professional members of the chapter. The Washington Art Library Resources Committee (WALRC) comprised research libraries in the greater Washington, DC area. In 1981, WALRC published Art serials: union list of art periodicals and serials in research libraries in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area (edited by Carolyn S. Larson) which proved to be a very useful and popular publication. In 2018 WALRC, which became inactive, disbanded and the funds from the sale of the publication were transferred to the Chapter and now support this award.

 

 

CAROLINE BACKLUND AWARD

 

Claralyn Burt, Intern in the Museum Profession in the Department of Image Collections of the National Gallery of Art Library, and graduate student in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, has received the Caroline Backlund Student Travel Award for 2020. Ms. Burt will be presenting a poster session on her project digitizing and creating MARC records for the Francis Bedford Archive, a collection of nineteenth-century albumen prints by this important British photographer. Her poster will explain the workflow and decisions behind the various steps of the project, offering an inside look into managing a photography archive/special collection. The end result of the project will enhance, and reimagine Francis Bedford’s place of importance in the field of photography. This will be Ms. Burt’s first ARLIS/NA conference.

 

The Backlund Award was established in 2002 and is named in honor of Caroline Backlund (1920-2016) who had a distinguished career as an art librarian, educator, and author. Mrs. Backlund, a long-time chapter member, received the ARLIS/NA Distinguished Service Award for her contributions to the Society in 1989. The Backlund Award is intended to help student members of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter become more involved in ARLIS/NA at the national level. It is maintained through donations from chapter members.
