It looks like the Harry Ransom Center at UT Austin has a collection of 10,000 digitized posters spanning American films across many decades.

Your student might call the Margaret Herrick Library in Los Angeles. The library is focused on the movie industry and might know where there are digitized posters, even if they do not have any at their library.
Maybe the curator at this new museum could help.
