About the Burke Museum and Speaker
Opening October 12, the New Burke will be a flagship facility for the Washington State Museum of Natural History and Culture. The New Burke turns the museum "inside-out," breaking down traditional museum barriers and inviting visitors to be part of a working research facility. The new, 113,000 sq. ft. building is 66% larger than the former facility. Nearly 60% of the museum is accessible or visible to visitors (compared to just over 30% in the former facility). Twelve visible, state-of-the-art labs and workrooms, along with an artists' workshop will serve more students and researchers, and more education space will allow the Burke to potentially double the number of Pre-K-12 students served each year.
Ashley Verplank McLelland serves as the Rights and Reproductions Manager of Ethnology at the Burke Museum. She is a professor specializing in Native Art of the Pacific Northwest.
