The Visual Resources Association Foundation (VRAF) is pleased to announce that Beyond Licenses: Integrating Creative Commons, RightsStatements.org, and Traditional Knowledge into Permissions will be held on November 22, 2019. This workshop will be hosted at the University of Denver and is open to cultural heritage professionals, the information and educational communities, and to anyone interested in visual culture. Beyond Licenses: Integrating Creative Commons, RightsStatements.org, and Traditional Knowledge into Permissions is one of four workshops being offered in the fifth year of the VRAF Regional Workshop Program. The VRAF is grateful to the Samuel H. Kress Foundation for their continued support of this exciting opportunity to partner with cultural heritage and educational institutions.

Workshop Description: Today’s visual resource professionals must understand that copyright is just one element of intellectual property rights and a multitude of “other” considerations that may need to be reviewed when undertaking licenses for reproductions of collection objects. This workshop will provide a baseline review of applicable intellectual property rights, including U.S. copyright law and fair use, before delving into a deeper understanding and utilization of Creative Commons licenses, RightsStatements.org, and Traditional Knowledge labels with collection objects to expand existing permissions practices at galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs). Participants will be introduced to a variety of resources and examples to help guide them and their constituents in making appropriate decisions regarding evolving permissions practices, including Open Access initiatives, at GLAM institutions.

About the Instructor: Beyond Licenses: Integrating Creative Commons, RightsStatements.org, and Traditional Knowledge into Permissions will be taught by Anne M. Young, Director of Legal Affairs and Intellectual Property at Newfields. At Newfields, Young oversees the rights and reproductions department, where she provides advice and leads institutional standards on a variety of legal issues in connection with Newfields’ activities, including, but not limited to: guidance on intellectual property matters, particularly copyright, privacy, publicity, and trademark; administering contracting policies and procedures; issues related to cultural patrimony and repatriation; overall risk mitigation; and interpretation of various institutional policies and procedures.

Young was formerly the photographic archivist for the Kinsey Institute, Indiana University and has worked for the Art Gallery of Ontario and George Eastman Museum. In 2018 she received a Master of Jurisprudence focused on intellectual property, art, and museum law from Indiana University’s Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Young previously received a Master of Arts in photographic preservation and collections management from Ryerson University and a Bachelor of Arts in art history and studio art (photography) from Indiana University.

She chaired the Rights and Reproductions Professional Practices committee of the American Alliance of Museum from 2012 to 2018 and was appointed to serve on the 2018 to 2021 term of the College Art Association’s Committee on Intellectual Property. Young received the Visual Resources Association’s Nancy DeLaurier Award in 2017 for her editorial work on Rights and Reproductions: The Handbook for Cultural Institutions, the second edition of which was published in 2019.

Registration for Beyond Licenses: Integrating Creative Commons, RightsStatements.org, and Traditional Knowledge into Permissions is now open. The fee for this day-long workshop is $125.
