Hi all artist files fans:

First, a big welcome to the many new members of the Artist Files SIG. It looks like about 60 new or renewing society members expressed interest in the AFSIG since the last conference.

I have a couple of updates:

Artist Files Revealed: Online Directory

The ARLIS/NA board recently directed the SIG to investigate how the directory could find a home in the new Commons resource that the society is building. To that end, we will be working with a couple of society members who are working directly with the Commons project to see if it is a good fit. I am encouraged that it will be.

Artist Files Cataloging

I just ran across an example in WorldCat where the only resources available on an artist are artist files. The example below, "Woodrow Blagg," illustrates the variety of cataloging approaches out there. The highlighted line is a new record that I created today using the new-ish artist files cataloging guidelines. I encourage everyone to think about how they could implement the guidelines to help normalize what our researchers see in WorldCat. Using the guidelines also aid OCLC in rounding up these records to potentially apply batch improvements or to create a more intelligible view for researchers using OCLC's Discovery interface (or some other discovery layer). I also cite Karen Stafford's news that was shared at the SIG's last meeting<http://artistfiles.arlisna.org/2019-artist-files-sig-annual-meeting-minutes/> in Salt Lake City indicating that applying the guidelines to the Art Institute's records significantly boosted use.

The guidelines are published here, and I'm always available to answer questions.
