Note: this is much like the previous reply but all of our book drives are open to the public, also very popular.

Dear Laura,

Here at the Stedelijk we have large book sales each year. We get loads of gifts from private persons, mostly we have at least 90% of the titles, and we accept the gifts under the condition that we are allowed to sell them. The money (each year about 4500.-) is added to the library budget. The sale takes place on  Friday and Saturday, the Friday afternoon is reserved for staff of the museum and friends of the museum, Saturday is free for all. Very popular event..

Onderwerp: [ARLIS-L] Ethics of selling books

Hi all -

I have an abundance of duplicate titles that I could certainly donate to staff or local libraries but many of them would fetch a decent price were I to sell them on ABEbooks or alibris. Have any of you explored the ethics of a museum library selling duplicate books for profit, however small? Most of the titles have been donated to the library through one channel or another.

Feedback? And thanks.
