Dear Colleagues:

I regret to tell you that the lights have dimmed on the life of my friend and the artist and curator Yani Pecanins, noted for her work in the art object, installations and artist's books.

Born in 1957 in Mexico City, her training was self-taught.  At age 20 she co-founded the independent publisher Cocina Ediciones, dedicated to the edition of artist books, until 1993, as well as in the magazine Paso de Peatones, and later, in 1985, together with Gabriel Macotela and Armando Sáenz with the gallery "El Archivero", which worked until 1993 as a gallery , archiving and promotion of artist books.

Some of the individual exhibitions presented by Pecanins include: The room inside, in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Oaxaca in 1998; Lost and Found, Pecanins Gallery, 2001; Small Memories, Pecanins Gallery, 2004; Intimate nature, at the Pecanins Gallery in 2007; Small Memories, at the Pecanins Gallery in 2008; Notes and drafts, in Machado Arte Espacio in 2011, and Paseo de Gracia, in the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art in 2013.

In 1993, she won the Fonca-Bancomer-Rockefeller Scholarship, at the Headland Center for the Arts San Francisco, USA; in 1995 he won first place in the Book as Object contest (National Council for Educational Development); in 1999 he obtained the Foster and Co-Investment grant from the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (Fonca) for the Exiles catalog, and in 2010 he was awarded the Fonca Creators Scholarship with the Paseo de Gracia Project.

Her work is in galleries, museums and institutions such as Metrònom, in Barcelona, the Library of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carrillo Gil Museum of Art, the Library at the University of San Diego, California, the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, and the Library of the University of New Mexico.
