By this logic every Holocaust memorial should be remodeled into a gym or shopping mall, thus setting the stage for a repetition of that grotesque blot in human history.

On a much smaller scale, my alma mater, Pomona College, has lost two of its traditional songs. “Torchbearers” was written by Ramsay L. Harris in 1930. In 1932 the men’s glee club traveled to St. Louis to the National Glee Club Championship. The money for the trip was raised during that Depression year from students and the community, and they could not afford to take the director. The glee club sang a capella with no conductor and beat out Yale and Penn State for first place, thus bringing this little college in the remote West into the national consciousness. Properly sung—and that’s no easy matter--“Torchbearers” is probably the most beautiful and evocative college song ever written, but it is based on a melody from the once-nearby Coahuilla Indians, so it is verboten. Does grieving its erasure make me a racist? I call “Torchbearers” a sublime homage.

If the mural is not painted directly on the wall, I would hope some more enlightened body will take responsibility for it. If it is, perhaps a suit is in order or, at least, a complete, professional documentation before the whitewashers arrive. And does anyone know why a paint job is $600,000?

Wow,

Its really seems clear contextualizing this in its historical and sociological time frame would be an amazing teaching tool.  I suppose removing it to another location would be too expensive.

I would be interested in hearing other's opinions though.
