The Metropolitan Museum Journal to provide free image service for its authors

Starting with volume 55, authors who publish in the Metropolitan Museum Journal (MMJ) will no longer be responsible to provide or pay for high-resolution images.  The editorial office at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will acquire all high-resolution images and obtain English-language, world publication rights for print and electronic editions of MMJ. Journal authors will no longer need to spend time and effort on securing images.

In a written statement, the journal editorial office notes “We are excited about this change, as it speaks to The Met's commitment to supporting art scholarship and the broader academic community. It is of particular value now, as academic journals have been under increasing pressure to keep costs down, often with the unfortunate result of increasing costs to the authors.”

This policy change further supports the MMJ's mission to "feature original research on the history, interpretation, conservation, and scientific examination of works of art in the Museum’s collection" and the Museum's mission to “… collect, study, conserve, and present significant works of art across all times and cultures in order to connect people to creativity, knowledge, and ideas."

Founded in 1968, the Metropolitan Museum Journal is a double-blind peer-reviewed scholarly journal published annually. This policy change for authors will help MMJ to continue to attract and support the best scholarship in the field.
