Digital Librarian, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art - Kansas City, MO The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, one of the country’s leading art museums is seeking a Digital Librarian to join the Library and Archives team. The Spencer Art Reference Library connects the museum’s staff and volunteers as well as the broader community including university faculty, students, collectors, artists and researchers from around the globe to a research collection of art and design resources. The Digital Librarian will join a team of professionals who are passionate about providing quality customer service, innovative arts programming, and new ways to access library and archival collections. This position is responsible for development, implementation and management of digital initiatives in the library and archives. In this role they will provide technical expertise and insight on all aspects of digital projects from metadata creation to library and museum platform integrations to outreach initiatives sharing how new digital tools and resources can support the museum’s active community of researchers. Museum, Library and Archival Collections The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art serves the community by providing access to its renowned collection of over 40,000 art objects and is best known for its Asian art, European and American paintings, photography, modern sculpture, and new American Indian and Egyptian galleries. The Spencer Art Reference Library supports scholarship and exploration in the visual arts with over 265,000 volumes as well as electronic resources. The museum’s archives preserves and makes accessible the museum’s history from its founders to the present day. Responsibilities Reporting to the Head, Library and Archives the Digital Librarian will collaborate with colleagues throughout the museum to plan, implement, and share resources with audiences of different backgrounds, interests, and needs. They will: · Work with the Head, Library and Archives to develop a strategic digital initiatives plan that aligns with and supports the museum’s strategic plan · Oversee development and lifecycle management of library and archives digital projects; including development of project specific metadata schema, software, authority management, training documentation, long-term project management, and preservation planning · Assist with on-going digital initiatives including web archiving, Missouri artists research project, use of institutional repository, annual wiki edit-a-thon, ILS migration and ArchiveSpace implementation · Ensure SARL’s digital practice aligns with best practices and standards for digital collections · Work with colleagues in the museum and partners in the community to integrate digitized resources into programming, outreach, and research · Share information on new development in digital scholarship including discovery tools, skills, technologies, collections, and methodologies with museum staff · Collaborate with Development to research grants to support digital initiatives in the Library and Archives · Engage with the professional community and maintain an awareness of emerging trends and opportunities in libraries, educational technology, digital initiatives, and scholarship · Represent the library and archives by participating in museum-wide task forces and projects as assigned · Support library and archives outreach and public service with occasional weekend and evening reference desk coverage and program facilitation Qualifications · Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited college · Knowledge of emerging technology related to digital collections · 1-2 years of experience working on digital projects in libraries, archives, or related fields · Strong project management skills; including planning, developing and overseeing timelines, budgets, and communications in libraries or archives setting · Knowledge of best practices for file management, metadata creation, digitization, long-term preservation, and migration of data between various platforms · Working knowledge of metadata tools, systems, and schema; including RDA, MARC, Dublin Core, and XML · Experience with web programming and design · Excellent communication skills; including the ability to communicate technical information with non-technical collaborators · Strong problem-solving skills, demonstrated creative and flexible thinking and experience working as part of a collaborative team Preferred Qualifications · Knowledge of library and archives systems and software including, ExLibris, Primo, Archive-It and ArchivesSpace · Knowledge of digital preservation best practices · Degree(s) in an art or design related field · Experience providing quality reference service and teaching information literacy classes The Community Geographically, this position is located in the Greater Kansas City metropolitan area, a community known for solid philanthropic support and a thriving arts community.
