Colleagues:

On behalf of the ARLIS/NA Executive Board, I am pleased to announce the publication of the NDSR Art Update

First, I would like to thank everyone that has been involved in the success of NDSR Art:

I highly recommend that you review the NDSR Art Update as it highlights the importance of digital preservation to art information professionals now and in the future.

Furthermore, the Update makes recommendations on how to move NDSR Art forward and suggests next steps as the IMLS grant is concluding at the end of this year.

Recommendations.  The task force has established three recommendations for sharing NDSR Art expert knowledge with ARLIS/NA membership and beyond:

1. Create a Digital Preservation Special Interest Group (SIG)

2. Create and effectively publicize more in-person and online professional development opportunities for digital preservation training within ARLIS/NA

3. Partner with societies and institutions outside of ARLIS/NA to offer expanded training opportunities and create best practices guidelines

Next Steps.  The task force provided ARLIS/NA with important questions that will help our society continue this important initiative:

1.    How does ARLIS/NA continue to steward learning and engage meaningfully with digital preservation after the two years of residencies?

2.    What is the future of NDSR Art?

a.    ARLIS/NA could partner with another museum and/or academic program to pursue further grant funding for another iteration of NDSR Art.

b.    Will the NDSR Art website continue after current IMLS grant ends?

3.    What are the digital preservation training needs of ARLIS/NA membership after NDSR Art? Did NDSR Art deliverables address needs of membership? If not, what resources does membership require?

Questions for our members. I am writing to ask you to think about the following questions:

1.    Are you interested in proposing a Digital Preservation SIG?

2.    Are you or do you think your institution is interested in implementing some of the recommendations and next steps?  And more specifically might your organization be interested in working with ARLIS/NA to apply for another Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Grant?  Do you have other ideas for grant funding to continue this important work?

3.    What do you think about the possibility of incorporating digital preservation topics into a re-envisioned Summer Educational Institute Workshop (SEI)?

4.    What do you think about the possibility of continuing to collaborate with Digital POWRR (Preserving Digital Objects With Restricted Resources)?  Digital POWRR could provide instructors, resources, and a workshop model, while NDSR Art and ARLIS/NA could provide learning materials in the form of case studies and a community of interested participants.

The final grant cohort is completing their work next month.  An NDSR final report will be made available early next year.

If you have questions or suggestions about moving NDSR Art forward, please reach out to any of the executive board members.

Best, Laura
