Art Book LA: Los Angeles as inspiration and generation of artists books, editions, and zinesJoin
us for a keynote and plenary session that looks into Los Angeles as a muse and site of artist books and their dissemination and production. Keynote by Hamza Walker, followed by a plenary session with Devin Troy Strother and Yuri Ogita of Coloured Publishing,
and Wendy Yao of Ooga Booga. Moderated by Farris Wahbeh.
Hamza Walker is the Executive Director of LAXART,
where he has organized the current exhibition of artists’ books, The Crisis of Representation as Illustrated with Plants and Flowers (on view until May 11). Walker has also curated Interlude: Sol Lewitt, Page-Works 1967–2007 at LAXART in 2018.
He was formerly at the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, and served as co-curator of the Hammer Museum’s biennial, Made in L.A. 2016.
Devin Troy Strother and Yuri Ogita co-founded
Coloured Publishing in 2015. Publishing outside institutional standards, the press aims to share ideas about an eclectic range of topics with full autonomy – being people of color in the US, celebrating under-appreciated cultural phenomena, and publishing
works by their fellow artists. Their exhibition A Mistake Is A Beautiful Thing at Printed Matter in 2018 explored their practice and artistic influences.
Wendy Yao founded Ooga Booga in 2004, which focuses
on artist publications, music, and independent culture. The shop also programs events and exhibitions by local, national, and international artists. Yao has also organized projects at the Swiss Institute, New York, the Kadist Foundation, San Francisco, and
the ICA Philadelphia. She is the 2017 recipient of the White Columns/Shoot the Lobster Award, which recognizes individuals who work to create opportunities for artists and audiences.
Farris Wahbeh is the Benjamain and Irma Weiss Director
of Research Resources at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where he oversees the Frances Mulhall Achilles Library and Archives, the Special Collections, Visual Resources, and the Permanent Collection Documentation Office.
