Digital Archivist, Art Institute of Chicago - Chicago, IL

BASIC FUNCTION 
Responsible for developing a sustainable infrastructure for collecting, processing, and preserving digital materials across the museum, and making digital materials accessible to staff and researchers; deploying that infrastructure to bring historically important digital institutional records into the AIC Institutional Archive; and preserving, processing, and making accessible other digital materials currently in the library’s archival collections as well as newly acquired digital materials.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.       Provides vision, focus, and leadership for digital preservation activities within the Libraries and Archives.

2.       Surveys the current digital landscape at the Art Institute, including digitized collections, born-digital files on current and legacy media, and other born-digital materials.

3.       Develops and documents policies, workflows, and procedures for accessioning, processing, describing, preserving, and providing access to digital records of the museum and digital assets in archives collections.

4.       Applies said workflows and procedures to born-digital material acquired from the Art Institute’s internal records, legacy media in existing hybrid collections, and newly-donated accessions.

5.       Works closely with stakeholders across the museum to contribute to planning and developing a digital preservation strategy.

6.       Establishes standards for integrating born-digital material into finding aids and catalog records.

7.       Trains existing staff on the born-digital procedures developed during the project and assists in their execution of the new procedures.

8.       Suggests and recommends local practices based on national conversations and developments in the digital preservation community.

9.       Promotes engagement with and contributes to national conversations relating to digital preservation.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·         Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent accredited degree with formal training in archival theory and practice.

·         Minimum of 2 years of experience in managing digital asset strategies

·         Demonstrated knowledge of practices in digital asset life management

·         Knowledge of various methods of digital preservation, including the use of file packing formats and comprehensive software programs, as well as the OAIS reference model and trusted digital repository concepts

·         Experience leading successful digital projects

·         Proven ability to holistically advance the function of digital preservation that interrelates to overall library and archives services

·         Knowledge of metadata standards for describing born-digital materials

·         Record of professional engagement and contribution, such as research, publication, and involvement in pertinent professional and scholarly organizations

·         Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and experience with project management

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively

·         Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate clearly and effectively with staff at all levels of the organization

·         An openness to being part of an equitable and inclusive staff community.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

·         Experience with digital asset management systems

·         Demonstrated leadership and decision-making ability to work in a team-oriented environment

·         Skilled in coordinating, negotiating and reaching agreements with a diverse workforce
