The Thomas J. Watson Library in The Metropolitan Museum of Art is pleased to announce an opening for the position of Senior Library Associate, Circulation and Technical Services, and Library Administration. This full-time position is a special opportunity to contribute to the success of an innovative and active art library at a world-class museum while learning and applying new skills.

The Senior Library Associate performs a variety of key activities in Watson Library’s team-based environment. This position processes new library acquisitions; assists with interlibrary loans; prepares periodicals binding shipments; participates in the management of current periodicals and provides service at the Circulation Desk. The Senior Library Associate provides essential administrative support from a front-facing office position. Library administration responsibilities include but are not limited to assisting with facilities, programming, correspondence, reports, preparation of the quarterly newsletter, and library fundraising initiatives.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

·         Serves as back-up in the front office and assists with library programs, projects, and general administration

·         Assists with correspondence relating to Friends of the Library, donor solicitations, and acknowledgements 

·         Provides outstanding customer service at the Circulation Desk (one hour per day) 

·         As part of a larger team, processes library material acquired through gift and purchase 

·         Collects data and statistics on library activities and prepares reports 

·         Serves as a member of the serials team to ensure the efficient and accurate receipt and payment of the library’s journal subscriptions 

·         Prepares bindery shipments for books and periodicals 

·         Assists in processing Interlibrary Loan requests 

·         Occasional evening work required to assist with Friends of the Library programs and other library events 

·         Occasional weekend work required (four Saturdays per year) 

·         Other related duties

 

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS
Experience & Skills:

·         Experience in the practices of office management

·         Experience in a museum or academic library required

·         Familiarity with an integrated library system (Circulation and Cataloging) required 

·         Demonstrated project management, problem-solving, and workflow analysis skills, as well as an aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail 

·         Ability to prioritize, plan, coordinate, and implement multiple projects 

·         Commitment to teamwork and responsiveness to museum staff and all library constituencies 

·         Demonstrated experience in providing excellent and proactive customer service 

·         Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a rapidly changing team environment required 

·         Excellent presentation skills and the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing (including correspondence) required 

·         High level of comfort with computing, online databases, office productivity software, and emergent technologies While performing the duties of this job, the employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and also push or pull objects weighing 300-400 pounds on wheels (book trucks)

 

Knowledge & Education:

·         B.A. required, preferably in Art History; work towards an M.L.S. or equivalent preferred

·         Knowledge of PCs, and Microsoft Office required

·         Familiarity with new technologies and applications, and understanding of how they can improve library efficiency and productivity

·         Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language preferred

 

The Thomas J. Watson Library is the central research library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Reflecting the depth and scope of the Museum’s collection, the library collects scholarly material from the art of early antiquity to contemporary art. Like the Museum, the library’s holdings are encyclopedic and global in nature and provide a broad range of research materials on Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Greek and Roman, Asian, Islamic, European and American art.
