Museum Specialist (Art): Image Specialist for French Art to 1900

The National Gallery of Art is seeking applicants for a museum specialist in the library’s Department of Image Collections. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and develop an extensive study collection of photographs, digital images, and other visual materials with emphasis on the art of France up to the year 1900.

The incumbent reports to the Chief, Department of Image Collections, and is responsible for

ˇ         assisting Gallery staff, visiting scholars, and public researchers with effective use of the department’s collections, providing reference assistance for locating images, performing specialized research for Gallery staff, and responding to inquiries and reference questions in writing or by telephone;

ˇ         conducting complex research on the department’s collections of French art to 1900, identifying specific photographic images of French art to enhance the collections, and recommending their purchase;

ˇ         creating online features highlighting special aspects of the French collections on the department’s web pages;

ˇ         creating new bibliographic and item-level records using the library’s integrated system, revising records to conform to evolving standards for cataloging and classification; contributing to the development of the department’s cataloging policy manual;

ˇ         performing digitization of analog visual materials for inclusion in the library’s integrated system; assisting in the preservation and archiving of digital image files following established standards for maintenance and refreshment; and cataloging and digitizing images for Gallery temporary exhibitions.

 

Qualifications:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility comparable to the next lower grade or comparable pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.

For this position candidates must possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service managing high-resolution images for a museum, library, or other cultural institution.

OTHER RELEVANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Must be fluent in both written and spoken French.

ˇ         Skill in providing research and reference support.

ˇ         Knowledge of art history and artists.

ˇ         Ability to catalogue holdings according to common and Gallery-specific conventions

ˇ         Skill in creating and managing digital images.
