Find inspiration to explore and expand your craft and career path in spoken word — highly recommended for writers who can’t sit still. This residency provides space to write and time to develop strong performance dynamics. Participants will benefit from mentoring, performance opportunities, studio recording time, access to special events, and engagement with a network of international artists.

Spotlight: Tanya Evanson |
Tanya is an Antiguan-Canadian poet, performer, producer, and arts educator with a history of 20 years in spoken word performance. Alongside features in documentaries, videopoems, TV, and radio, she has performed live at many international venues. Tanya's fourth studio album ZENSHIP received critical acclaim for pushing boundaries between poetry and live music. Bothism (2017) is her first published poetry collection and Nouveau Griot was released in 2018. |

Spotlight: Saul Williams |
Saul has gained global fame for his poetry and writings, performed in over 30 countries, and read in over 300 universities. He has spoken at the White House, Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Center, The Louvre, The Getty Center, and Queen Elizabeth Hall as well as in countless, villages, townships, community centres, and prisons across the world. His 2016 album Martyr Loser King and most recently, his record Blues For Memo with legendary jazz saxophonist David Murray, have earned world-wide acclaim. |

Banff International Literary Translation Centre |
This program offers student, emerging, and professional literary translators a period of uninterrupted work on a current project. Participants will work in a trilingual environment with mentors and peers, and a faculty of accomplished translators of French, English, and Spanish. Participants will also have an opportunity to consult with the author whose work they are translating.

Literary Journalism |
This residency encourages the exploration of new ideas in journalism and experimentation in writing. The program is open to experienced fiction and non-fiction writers, journalists, freelance critics or curators, artists, and academics. Successful applicants will receive 100% scholarship and a $2,000 commission for the completed manuscript. |

Winter Writers Retreat Reading Night: Anne Fleming |
This event features readings from writers in the Winter Writers Retreat program, hosted by guest mentor Anne Fleming. Anne is the author of five books of fiction and poetry including Gay Dwarves of America, poemw, and The Goat. Her writing has won National Magazine awards and has been shortlisted for the Governor-General’s Award, the Journey Prize, the Danuta Gleed Award, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize.
