That's a great point Eric; You have made me realize that I should clarify that the stipulations of "private use only" / "not for public distribution" are on the item itself (both the dust jacket and the t.p. verso) and are presumably the wishes of the publisher. The donor is, to my knowledge, unaware of this.I agree that the intended meaning of "private use" is unclear and I wonder if it would be appropriate to contact the publisher.---------- Forwarded message ---------

Subject: Re: [ARLIS-L] Donation of materials intended "for private use only"
To: Sarah Bilotta <[log in to unmask]>Good Afternoon:Others may have actual experience with this type of donation (we've never had such), but it would seem to me that donating to a library would contradict any desire to limit use to "private use only." What purpose did the donor have in mind in making the donation if the catalog wasn't going to be available to library users, and what exactly does the donor mean by "private use"? To me "may not be copied or distributed without permission" does not disallow use within the library of the catalog. To me it means that the catalog, in part or in whole, cannot be copied and those copies distributed, or the catalog lent on ILL.I'll be curious to hear what others think.EricHello all,I write seeking a bit of wisdom from anyone who has had experiences with donations of catalogs or other print materials from museums/galleries/art book publishers, not intended for public distribution. We recently received a donation which included the "for private use only" catalog A Collection of China's Pagodas: 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition from Mee-Seen Loong Fine Art LLC (not to be confused with the longer 158-page publicly distributed version of this catalog, OCLC #905349670). We are obviously hesitant to catalog this because of its multiple indications that the work was intended "for private use only" and "may not be copied or distributed without permission."~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
