Medieval Digital Resources

MDR is a curated database of peer-reviewed digital materials for the study of the Middle Ages. Users can browse an alphabetical list or search using controlled-vocabulary subject tags to find vetted online resources of many types, including: imagebanks; bibliographies and reference works; pedagogical tools; editions and translations; music and other multimedia collections; interpretative websites; and new works of digital scholarship. Please note that MDR does not include resources that are paywalled or require password access, although some resources may have restrictive use-licenses. The Database can be accessed from the Resources tab of the Medieval Academy of America website.

Resources are selected for MDR by subject and digital specialists with reference to the rigorous Standards for Web Publication developed by the Medieval Academy of America (MAA).

Digital Serlio Project

The Digital Serlio Project at Avery Architectural & Fine Arts Library presents Avery’s unparalleled holdings of the published works of Sebastiano Serlio and On Domestic Architecture (Tutte l'opere d'architettura, Libro VI) his unpublished manuscript also held in Avery's collection. The Project is also an effort to facilitate active use of the collection in curricular and research activities, and to promote new scholarship; as such it brings together current research on Serlio’s works.

The John G. Johnson Collection: A History and Selected Works

The John G. Johnson Collection: A History and Selected Works, edited by Christopher D. M. Atkins, is the first volume in an online series of scholarly publications focusing on the renowned collections at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was published on the centenary of John G. Johnson’s extraordinary gift of European painting and sculpture to the City of Philadelphia. A related exhibition, Old Masters Now: Celebrating the Johnson Collection, was held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art from November 3, 2017, to February 19, 2018.

Marcel Breuer Digital Archive

In 2009, Syracuse University’s Special Collections Research Center received the first of two National Endowment for the Humanities grants to create a digital repository for Breuer’s archive, drawing largely on Syracuse's extensive holdings but incorporating select material from a number of other archives in the United States and abroad. The material digitized from other archives is not comprehensive and researchers should consult partner institutions for more information about their holdings.

The website is organized around projects, both built and unbuilt, and provides access to drawings, correspondence, and photographs, along with manuscripts of Breuer's writings, office and teaching records. Each digital object is accompanied by detailed metadata derived from the original archival material.

Art historians have traditionally used physical light boxes to prepare exhibits or curate collections. On a light box, they can place slides or printed images, move the images around at will, group them as desired, and visually compare them. The transition to digital images has rendered this workflow obsolete. Now, art historians lack well-designed, unified interactive software tools that effectively support the operations they perform with physical light boxes.

To address this problem, we designed ARIES - ARt Image Exploration Space, an interactive image manipulation system that enables the exploration and organization of fine digital art. The system allows images to be compared in multiple ways, offering dynamic overlays analogous to a physical light box, and supporting advanced image comparisons and feature-matching functions, available through computational image processing.
