Karen: I'm unsure how many brands were sold overseas at which points in time, but also should've been more specific: see the finding aid for this collection for materials related to non-American materials that may provide some inspiration or related resources: http://hdl.handle.net/10079/fa/med.ms.0020.

The student could also potentially contact the Head of Yale's Medical Historical Library, Melissa Grafe, to see if there are particular resources that would be particularly rich in this area. She curated this exhibition and her contact information is included with the exhibition link.

Best regards,

Beth

Hi Karen,

There's a GREAT online exhibition from Yale's Medical Library, Selling Smoke, on that could be used for researching just this topic, and features numerous advertisements, posters, and visual materials: http://exhibits.library.yale.edu/exhibits/show/sellingsmoke. The last page of the online exhibition component also offers additional resources that may be useful as well.

Hope it provides some inspiration and great resources!

Best regards,

Beth

View this Exhibit. For well over a century, the tobacco industry has been selling smoke in America and abroad: marketing the very idea of smoking with the slick and calculated use of celebrity testimonials, promises of health benefits, memorable slogans, promotional sweepstakes, and more.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] French cigarette advertisements

Hello All,

I have a student who wants to study French cigarette advertisements from the late 19th to early 20th century. I had hoped I could direct her to some popular magazines in our collection but we don't seem to have much at the time. I'm looking for online sources of French magazine or advertising archives.

She's particularly interested in their relationship to body image, so I thought fashion magazines might be useful.

So far I've found some on Google Images and in the Gallica catalog. Can anyone recommend any other sources?

thank you,
Karen Bouchard
