The Smithsonian Libraries is pleased to announce two paid internship programs for Summer of 2019. One is specifically for undergraduate students enrolled at an HBCU (Kathryn Turner Diversity and Technology Internship); the other is open to both graduate and undergraduate students in a variety of programs at any college or university (50th Anniversary Internship Program). Internship sites are in the Washington D.C. metro area, and are not suitable for remote intern applications.

Kathryn Turner Diversity and Technology Internship (https://library.si.edu/turnerinternship)  
This full-time, 10-week program allows a student enrolled at a Historically Black College or University with a background in computer science to sharpen his/her skills and gain real world experience in the largest museum library system in the world.  

 

For Summer 2019, this internship will focus on Cross-linking Data. The intern will assist in a variety of limited-scope projects cleaning, normalizing, and matching data between the Libraries' databases and systems including our Digital Library, the Biodiversity Heritage Library, and unique data sets related to and important to the fields of Botany and Zoology.  

 

50th Anniversary Internship Program (https://library.si.edu/50thAnniversaryInternships) 
This program was created in honor of the Libraries’ 50th Anniversary to help introduce students to the realm of museum and research libraries. Interns in this cohort will be a mix of undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of Smithsonian Libraries’ departments.  Internships will be full time for eight weeks during the summer of 2019, with stipend levels dependent on academic level.  

50th Anniversary Undergraduate projects:  

  • Discovery Services - Digital Presence and Footprint 
  • Supporting Access to Zoological Literature: Article Definition in the Biodiversity Heritage Library 


50th Anniversary Graduate projects:   

  • Researching Art Ephemera Legacy Collections 
  • Preservation Services: Mold Remediation and Re-binding 
  • Hirshhorn Library Special Collections 

Funding for the 50th Anniversary intern class was provided by the Secretary of the Smithsonian and the Smithsonian National Board.
