Dear ARLISians,

As some of you may know, the Cataloging Advisory Committee of ARLIS/NA has
recently concluded a two-year project, working with partner institutions
and led by Columbia University, on the ArtFrame
<https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/LD4P/ArtFrame> project. ArtFrame is a
subgroup within the larger Mellon-funded LD4P
<https://wiki.duraspace.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=74515029> project
which worked to build an extension to the BIBFRAME ontology for the
description of two- and three-dimensional art objects in the linked data
environment.

During the project, the ArtFrame group and the Rare Materials Ontology
Extension
<https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/LD4P/Rare+Materials+Ontology+Extension>
recognized many shared concerns in their respective projects and in
response, combined their work and developed a single set of models. The
result is the Art & Rare Materials BIBFRAME Ontology Extension (ARM) which
is now housed in the ARM Github repository <https://github.com/LD4P/arm>.
Other project outcomes include detailed documentation of each model,
application profiles and controlled vocabularies which are all available
via the ArtFrame project page
<https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/LD4P/ArtFrame>.

In June 2018 at ALA Annual, the Bibliographic Standards Committee of the
Rare Book and Manuscript Section (RBMS-BSC) of ACRL and ALA committed to
maintain and develop ARM until June 2020, at which point it will
re-evaluate its commitment. RBMS-BSC wishes to continue ARM’s development
with the continued collaboration of ARLIS/NA and with other interested
communities.

Needless to say, we are very proud of this work and excited about its
future under the stewardship of RBMS-BSC, as well as ARLIS/NA’s continued
involvement.

I’d like to thank the following CAC members who worked on this project over
its two-year term for their commitment and dedication: William Blueher
(11/2017-), Sherman Clarke, Marie-Chantal L'Écuyer-Coelho, Tamara Fultz
(2016-2017), John A. Maier, Elizabeth O'Keefe (11/2017-), Maria Oldal,
Andrea Puccio and Karen Stafford.

Best wishes,

Bronwen Bitetti
