Anne,

The Anthropology library was housed inside the Museum and did get destroyed. They are currently deploying a website to help with donations (not sure it's been officially launched yet, but it any case here's the link: https://franciscakeller.weebly.com/english.html)

Best,
Luiza

I hadn’t seen this library-specific update (apologies if it is a repeat.) If you were curious about the collection at the Nat’l Museum of Brazil, it looks as though the library was more or less spared, and colleagues in the sciences (the Biodiversity Heritage Library) are pulling together to ensure relevant publications are digitized and preserved.

Subject: Update on the tragic fire at the Museu Nacional (Rio)

On 11 September, along with Carolyn Sheffield (BHL Program Manager), Constance Rinaldo (BHL Chair) and Joe DeVeer (both Harvard/MCZ), we received an update from our BHL SciELO colleagues in São Paolo:

Henrique Rodrigues

Unidade de Indexação - BHL

SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online

FAPESP - CAPES - CNPq - BIREME - FapUNIFESP

Denise Peres Sales

Coordenadora do Processo de Indexação de Periódicos

SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online

FAPESP - CAPES - CNPq - BIREME - FapUNIFESP

Henrique confirmed that the library of the museum was housed in a separate building and essentially undamaged (except for books staff may have had in the main building). He has been in regular communication with Leandra Pereira de Oliveira (Chief Librarian, Biblioteca do Museu Nacional/UFRJ) who is working with the team assessing overall damage.

Our BHL partners are offering assistance with providing access to Museu Nacional collection through BHL. The New York Botanical Garden has previously scanned volumes 1-24 of Archivos do Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro. BHL SciELO has scanned the remaining volumes from 25 forward and is in the process of uploading those to BHL. Various BHL staff have offered to assist with the processing of those volumes.

We've also had generous offers to digitize additional Museu Nactional publications and/or relevant Brazilian publications. Henrique will consult with Leandra to target publications that will be most useful. Working with Henrique, we will also work to build (as needed and defined by our Brazilian colleagues.

Henrique will be giving us updates and we'll keep you all informed as things develop.
