DESCRIPTION
The Department of History of Art, University of California at Berkeley, seeks a full-time Academic Coordinator to lead its Visual Resources Center, reporting to the Chair of the Department and supervising a Visual Communication Specialist, a Digital Curator, and student assistants. The Coordinator oversees all aspects of building and maintaining analog and digital image collections and is tasked to develop a new “V-Lab,” a real and virtual site for teaching, research, support, and exploration in digital art history. Advising, training, and consulting as necessary, the Coordinator will collaborate with faculty and students on existing and new digital projects in teaching and research, in cooperation with other campus digital humanities initiatives and in outreach to initiatives elsewhere. The Coordinator is responsible for acquisition and oversight of high-end imaging equipment and helps develop funding initiatives for the VRC/V-Lab and digital art history at Berkeley. The Coordinator will develop frameworks and forums for digital art history such as an electronic research portal, course modules, and workshops on current developments.

The Academic Coordinator responsibilities include:

·         Supervises all aspects of building and maintaining the digital collections of the Visual Resources Center, including digitizing and cataloging/publishing and technical and research support.

·         Develops “V-Lab” in VRC space, a real and virtual site for teaching, research, support, and exploration. In V-Lab context, collaborates with and advises faculty and students on digital art history and provides training and support for digital initiatives in teaching and research.

·         Helps initiate and implement digital art history teaching support and academic research projects, in collaboration with other campus digital humanities and similar units and other institutions

·         Responsible for oversight of departmentally-held high-end imaging equipment in departmental teaching and research space

·         Develops funding initiatives for VRC/V-Lab and digital art history teaching and research in History of Art.

·         Engages in campus and international outreach appropriate to further development of digital art history teaching and research in History of Art at UC Berkeley.

·         Supervises staff and student employees in the Visual Resource Center.


An advanced degree or enrollment in an advanced degree program is required at the time of application. Three years’ experience in advanced visual imaging technologies in art history, including navigation of major image data bases, current visualization and presentation technologies, and image licensing, in college/university and/or museum/collection contexts are required by the start date of the job.

Preferred qualifications include:

·         PhD in art history/visual studies.

·         Demonstrable familiarity with current technology and issues in digital humanities.

·         Working knowledge of major scholarly language of art history other than English (e.g., Spanish, German, Chinese).

·         Experience in visualization, image processing, 3-D modeling and reconstruction, and laser scanning.

·         Experience giving academic and training consultations and presentations in digital art history.

·         Experience in substantial collaborative projects in digital art history.

Salary range
