Head, Institute of Fine Arts Library- New York University, NYC, NY

Description:

New York University, Division of Libraries, in collaboration with the New York University Institute of Fine Arts (the Institute), seeks a qualified individual to administer the Library of the Institute of Fine Arts, which includes the Stephen Chan Library of Fine Arts and the Conservation Center Library. The Institute Library is non-circulating and supports the faculty and graduate students of the Institute.

The Head of the Institute Library, reporting jointly to the Institute’s Director and to the Division of Libraries’ Associate Dean for Collections and Research Services, is responsible for all aspects of the Institute Library’s management, including oversight of the Library’s technical and public services, development of the Library’s collections, and liaison with the Institute’s faculty and students. The incumbent works closely with the Institute’s Director and its faculty in shaping the Library’s programs and collections. The position oversees the work of a reference and instruction librarian and other staff, and shares the work of providing reference, research consultation, and library instruction. The Head of the Institute of Fine Arts Library works in tandem with the Institute’s Manager of Digital Media and Computer Services in ensuring that Institute faculty and students have access to digital tools and services for instruction and research. The Institute Library is part of the NYU Division of Libraries system and the Head of the Institute Library is a member of the Division of Libraries faculty. The Institute Library Head works closely with colleagues in many areas of the Division of Libraries to coordinate shared services, policies and objectives. The incumbent will develop and implement the Library’s strategic plan, in relation to the goals of the Institute as set forth by the Institute Director, and is expected to build upon existing collaborative relationships with other New York area libraries, arts programming, and the city’s museums.

Qualifications

Required:
·         ALA accredited MLS and subject Master's degree in Art History.
·         Minimum five years previous library experience in collection development, as well as experience in reference and/or instruction in an academic or research library with a specific focus on art, working with faculty and graduate students.
·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff in a team environment.
·         Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills.
·         Evidence of ability to provide leadership and to work collaboratively with faculty and to build a successful service program in a large and complex academic environment.
·         Reading knowledge of at least two Western European languages in addition to English
·         Active engagement in appropriate professional organizations, such as ARLIS/NA.


Preferred:
·         Demonstrated skills in personnel and financial management.


Salary/Benefits: Faculty status and an attractive benefits package, including five weeks annual vacation. Salary is commensurate with experience and background.

The extensive library collections are located both onsite at the Duke House and in offsite storage. They include a distinguished rare book collection. The Conservation Center Library is a non-circulating research collection located on the second floor of the Stephen Chan House at 14 East 78th Street. It includes rare book and videotape collections. Both libraries are non-circulating collections.
