I am pleased to announce that Meredith Kahn, Women’s Studies Librarian at the University of Michigan, has accepted an appointment as the first ARLIS/NA Open Access Coordinator. Meredith served on the task force that produced the Open Access Task Force Final Report (2017), which recommended ways our society could continue to integrate an open approach for future ARLIS/NA publishing, pulling together a complex picture of ARLIS/NA publishing with concrete strategies for the society going forward.

In response to that report, the ARLIS/NA Executive Board voted to create this special appointment, who will be responsible for the following duties:
In conjunction with the executive and editorial boards, develops near and long-term strategies for expanding society participation in open access (OA) initiatives; coordinates ARLIS/NA publication and distribution activities consonant with the society’s commitment to OA principles;
advises ARLIS/NA groups on current developments in open access policies and trends and reports on society OA initiatives to the membership; and
participates in discussions with affiliate organizations and third-party service providers on matters relating to OA opportunities.

Among the first projects Meredith will join in her new capacity is as co-chair (with editorial director Roger Lawson), is the newly established Humanities Commons Planning Task Force. In June, the ARLIS/NA executive board approved this task force to explore in detail the benefit and detriments of joining the Humanities Commons as a means of bringing the society’s publications and learning tools to a wider range of related professions in an open access platform. Main topics to be considered include costs, content, and implementation, with particular regard for the impact of such participation on membership retention, publishing & website content, educational programs, and association management. Further information about the task force’s membership and strategy are forthcoming.

Thanks to Meredith for her willingness to serve.
Sincerely,
Kim
