Through his collection development, curating and writing from the early 1970s to date, Clive has played a fundamental role in defining and bringing attention to the medium of artists' books. He worked as Librarian at Chelsea School of Art (1970-1977) and Library Director at MoMA (1977-1994), where he created important artists’ books collections. He served on the boards of the Center for Book Arts (New York), Franklin Furnace Archive and Printed Matter (president 1992-1993). A collection of historical texts, manifestos, catalogues entries and essays was published in 2013, titled Booktrek: Selected Essays on Artists' Books 1972-2010 (JRP-Ringier). His areas of expertise also include Conceptual art (Live in your head: concept and experiment in Britain, 1965-75; Voids: a retrospective), Fluxus (Fluxus: selections from the Gilbert and Lila Silverman Collection) and artists like Ed Ruscha, Ray Johnson, Ulises Carrion and many others.
His contribution to the professional literature of art librarianship is vast, including seminal catalogues and other monographs such as The Art Press: Two Centuries of Art Magazines (Art Book Company, 1976), co-edited with Trevor Fawcett, published on the occasion of the International Conference on Art Periodicals and the exhibition The Art Press at the Victoria and Albert Museum; Art library manual: a guide to resources and practice (Bowker, 1977), edited by Philip Pacey; Please come to the show (Occasional Papers, 2014), edited by David Senior; and many articles published in the ARLIS Newsheet, Art Libraries Journal and Art Documentation among other key professional journals. He has been active for the last five decades in a range of professional bodies, and is a founding member of ARLIS UK & Ireland (secretary 1970-1972) and long standing member of ARLIS/NA (secretary 1979-1981, president 1989-1990).
