ARCHITECTURAL RECORD
MAGAZINE IS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
USModernist to host issues from 1891 to 2013

New York, NY (June 14, 2018) -- Alex Bachrach, Publisher of Architectural Record, Cathleen McGuigan, its Editor-in-Chief and George Smart, Founder of USModernist, announce an historic agreement making nearly 122 years of Architectural Record available online to the public for the first time. The magazine was started in 1891.

Back issues of Architectural Record, the leading journal of the architectural profession in the United States, will become part of USModernist Library, the largest open digital collection of major US 20th-century architecture magazines in the world, with free access to approximately 2.1 million downloadable pages.  Search capability will be added over the next few weeks. The back issues will eventually be available on the magazine’s website, architecturalrecord.com, as well.

Published by BNP Media, Architectural Record  is an essential chronology of American architectural history. Throughout its 127 years in print, the monthly magazine has fostered widespread readership among architecture, engineering and design professionals by featuring high-quality photos, detailed coverage of projects and insightful commentary on the profession and public impact of architecture.

US Modernist, a 501[c]3 organization, is the host of two vast digital archives, one the Library of American architecture magazines, the other a Masters Gallery that thoroughly documents the residential work of every major 20th century modernist architect working in the United States. It is also the founder and sponsor of USModernist Radio, a lighthearted podcast that talks to “fascinating people who own, sell, create, love, and hate Modernist architecture, the most controversial houses and buildings in the world.”

This landmark relationship between Architectural Record and USModernist aligns the goals of the magazine to promote architecture and the architectural profession, architectural literacy and appreciation with those of USModernist to document, preserve and promote Modernist American architecture.

“Making the rich archives of Architectural Record available online has been a longstanding goal for us,,” said McGuigan. “George Smart is providing a wonderful service for architects, scholars and everyone who loves design.”

The founder of USModernist, George Smart, received the 2016 AIA Institute Honors for Collaborative and Professional Achievement, which recognizes non-architects who have positively influenced or advanced the architectural field. In its comments the AIA specifically noted “Smart’s leadership in creating a bridge between the public and design professionals.”

Of this collaboration, Smart notes that “Adding Architectural Record’s archives into our library gives the public an incredible resource of history and information about nearly every building that has ever mattered.  In this era where Modernist houses and buildings are regularly destroyed, access to legacy publications has never been more critical for preservation.”

There are a few missing Architectural Record issues; this link lists the exact dates that the library is still seeking.  The public is encouraged to contribute to the archive as well as other titles that USModernist Library features. This agreement with Architectural Record covers 1891-2013; issues from the last five years (2013-2018) must still be purchased directly from the magazine.
