Dear Maryhelen:

Thank you for your kind words. There is an ARLIS/NA Documentation Committee, one of whose charges is to do oral histories of prominent ARLIS/NA members—officers, etc. Someone from the Retirement SIG should be in communication with whoever is the new chair of that committee. However, I take your point—there are probably Retirement SIG members who may not have been ARLIS/NA officers, but who have been ARLIS/NA members for a long time, perhaps involved on committees or other SIGs, or have been speakers or moderators, or who have worked on past conferences—and they are part of the ARLIS story too. Perhaps someone could volunteer to be an interviewer and someone else an interviewee at the next conference? If just one oral history was done at each annual conference, it would add up to a special archive within a few years. Perhaps one that could be available online on the AWS. And don’t forget—it’s not enough to interview someone or to volunteer to be interviewed—someone must also volunteer to transcribe and edit the interview! That’s the hard part—the tedious job that can take 7 or 8 hours for each recorded hour. But it is essential if we are serious about posterity.

To Retirement SIG Members,

Let Joan Benedetti be a role model and inspiration to all of us for her tireless work on making sure her efforts in her Los Angeles --pre-retirment days carries forward into oral art/archival posterity. Joan has been instrumental in the establishment of the ARLISI/NA Retirement SIG. Now as SIG members, we have so many stories to tell and share -- let's figure out a way to do that!

Thanks Joan for your ongoing commitment and involvement in the many ways that ARLIS/NA members can share their knowledge and experience.

Appreciations to you --

Maryhelen Jones
