Diversity Forum

The Art of Belonging: Intersectional & Anti-Oppressive Models in Art Librarianship

The Diversity Committee forum at the 2019 ARLIS/NA Annual Conference in Salt Lake City will focus on Intersectionality in leadership, administration, and professional spaces. We hope to address issues that were raised on the conference brainstorming site as well as feedback from previous forums (i.e. Whiteness in librarianship, (dis)ability, class). Rather than invite one outside speaker for the forum, we want to hear from our membership about their own experiences, practices, service, and strategies. This will be an active session with brief presentations/performances, group discussion/activities/reflection, and action steps for members to bring to their home institutions.

We are looking for presenters who prioritize anti-oppressive practices to speak briefly on their own experiences, challenges, and actions they have taken at their institutions and/or within the profession to address issues regarding race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, (dis)ability, class, religion, immigration status, mental health and wellbeing. Presenters are encouraged to share active participation/learning/training ideas as part of their proposal and will need to contribute to the planning of the forum. Presentations should touch on administration, leadership, and professional spaces in libraries, archives, and art institutions. Speakers do not need to hold an administrative or supervisory position to be considered a leader in this work. All perspectives are encouraged and welcomed.

If you are interested in speaking and/or facilitating our forum, please submit a brief description of your presentation, as well as ideas for a related group activity or discussion question, to [log in to unmask] by May 16.
