Excuse the delayed response. Hope this is still of interest to the list.

The Morgan Library & Museum owns an extensive collection of games and toys, mostly of English, German, French, Italian, and American origin.

The circa 500 items include peepshows, panoramas, paper dolls, board games, optical toys, building blocks, pop-up books, playing cards, jig-saw puzzles, and miniature theaters, and they were created mostly during the 18th and 19th centuries.

This collection is in the care of the Department of Printed Books, and is available for consultation in the Reading Room by appointment. Application form: http://www.themorgan.org/research/reading-room-application

Selected items have been displayed in various Morgan exhibitions over the years, including: "Honor, Glory, Adventure! Books for boys in the age of Pierpont Morgan", 2002, and "Be Merry and Wise", 1996.

The items can be searched by subject/genre or keyword in CORSAIR, the Morgan’s collection catalog, with search limits set to Printed Books.

Hello,

Here is a brief description of what we have at the Canadian Centre for Architecture:

Comprising over 800 items, the collection of architectural toys and games spans two centuries of toy manufacture in Europe and America and represents the full range of construction toys, including traditional wood building blocks, sets of paper architecture, and construction kits of metal, plastic or artificial stone. These toys and games provide rich insights into architectural history, particularly as toy manufacturers have always been quick to follow and incorporate into their products the latest technological and stylistic changes.

This collection is available for consultation but handling of restricted so these are not meant for playing. Toys and games from it are often used in exhibitions. For instance, we acquired a group of games for the exhibition “Sorry, Out of Gas.”

Best,

mar

Hampshire College has a game collection (both analog board games and digital games) which you can read about and browse here:

I wouldn't say we have a board game collection, but we do have some games out for patrons to play.

Most popularly there is always a game of chess being played. [People just do one move as they walk by the board and then flip over the card that says whose turn it is.]

We also have very pretty sets of backgammon and dominoes; both from Ridley's.

And:

Spec-trix ( a color game)

CUBU (visual illusion game)

Memory (from Maharam)

Charles Eames' House of Cards
