Hello –
I am working on a research request to help one of our Conservators determine the composition of a material used in one of our artworks. We’re looking for art supply catalogs from the 1950s-1980s to find
information about the availability of polystyrene foam boards sold as artists’ supports. While technically the board is called “extruded polystyrene foam board with paper/card board laminate,” the terminology could range from Foam board, Fome-Cor / Foamcore
/ Foam-cor (etc.), Styrofoam board, or Plastic foam board. We are especially interested in finding something from New York City (Lee’s Art Shop, New York Central Art Supply, Utrecht Supply, Pearl Paint, Sam Flax, etc.) or from any distributors that sold to
those stores.
I’ve been searching multiple union and institutional catalogs to no avail, so I’m hoping one of you know where I can find some of these catalogs!
