Dear ARLIS/NA colleagues:

I am sharing the below OCLC Research reports, Descriptive Metadata for Web Archiving, which were published yesterday. Several ARLIS/NA members served on the OCLC RLP Web Archiving Metadata Working Group (this work was initially inspired by a meeting at the 2014 ARLIS Conference in Washington, D.C.).

If these reports spark your interest, please consider joining in the Web Archiving Special Interest Group meeting at the 2018 ARLIS/NA Conference in NYC! We will meet from 1:45-3:15pm on Monday, 2/26, in the Madison Room.

Our SIG agenda includes updates from Webrecorder.io, Archive-It, the International Internet Preservation Consortium (IIPC) Training Working Group, and Columbia's Avery Library Web Archive. Further details can be found in SCHED: http://sched.co/CqMb

Best regards,
Sumitra

Subject: [BULK] [EXTERNAL] MetaMan IG: Just published! "Descriptive Metadata for Web Archiving" reports

Dear OCLC Research Library Partners Metadata Management Interest Group -
I alerted you two days ago that there would be an announcement soon on the publication of OCLC Research's newest report, Descriptive Metadata for Web Archiving - and it's today! It's actually three reports:

  * Descriptive Metadata for Web Archiving<https://www.oclc.org/research/publications/2018/oclcresearch-descriptive-metadata-recommendations.html>: Recommendations for creating consistent metadata efficiently while addressing the unique characteristics of websites and collections
  * Literature Review of User Needs<https://www.oclc.org/research/publications/2018/oclcresearch-descriptive-metadata-literature-review.html>: Conducted to inform the OCLC Research Library Partners Web Archiving Metadata Working Group's development of metadata best practices, this review characterizes types of end users, their research methodologies, barriers to use, discovery interfaces, and the need for support services and outreach as well as documenting the needs of metadata practitioners.
  * Review of Harvesting Tools<https://www.oclc.org/research/publications/2018/oclcresearch-descriptive-metadata-harvesting-tools.html>: Analysis of 11 web harvesting tools' descriptive metadata functionalities and their ability to automatically generate descriptive metadata supporting discoverability of archived web resources.

This impressive body of work from the 26-member Web Archiving Metadata Working Group<https://www.oclc.org/research/themes/research-collections/wam.html> led by my colleagues Jackie Dooley and Dennis Massie arose as the result of surveys that highlighted that the lack of a common approach to creating metadata was the most widely shared challenge across the web archiving community. The work represents collaboration among experts within the OCLC Research Library Partnership and benefitted from consultations with the International Internet Preservation Consortium, the Society of American Archivists Web Archiving Section, the Internet Archive's Archive-It Program, and from community input and feedback.

Happy reading! I'd be glad to convey your feedback and comments.

Cheers,

Karen
