Session II: Jessica Spring

11-15, 2018

The Daredevil is in the Details: Mastering Letterpress Composition

Armed with composing sticks and line gauges, we will delve into the

finer points—and picas—of typesetting and composition, kerning and

letterspacing, and multiple color registration. Students will start small

by creating ephemera on a scale where detailed work really sings. We’ll

experiment with Daredevil Furniture—lasercut furniture designed

at Springtide Press—to set metal and wood type and ornaments in

circles, curves and angles for printing on platen or cylinder presses.

Historic methods and tricks of the trade will be covered, as well as
effective

makeready, ink mixing and additives, and strategies for edition

printing. Students will complete the class by creating editioned prints

to exchange, plus take a field trip to see typecasting in action at M&H

Foundry in San Francisco. This workshop is appropriate for those with

some letterpress printing experience who want to build on their skills.

Jessica Spring learned to set real metal type in 1989 and has been a
letterpress

printer ever since, most recently inventing Daredevil Furniture to help

other printers set type in circles, curves and angles. Her work at
Springtide

Press—artist books, broadsides and ephemera—is included in collections

around the country and abroad. She collaborates on the Dead Feminists

broadside series and is co-author of Dead Feminists: Historical Heroines

in Living Color. Spring has an MFA from Columbia College Chicago and

teaches book arts at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington.
