Dear ARLIS/NA Community:
In the spirit of ARLIS/NA’s 2018 conference theme “Out of Bounds,” the Executive Board and the New York Conference Planning Committee are pleased to announce the roll out of a paperless program solely in SCHED for the annual conference in New York City.
A number of issues were considered in making this forward-thinking decision.
- Environmental conservation: Printing hundreds of programs will require many thousands of pages of paper and a great deal of ink, as well as energy. A digital conference program is an environmentally friendly alternative.
- Currency of information: Speaker information, room assignments, and titles may change between the time of printing a paper program and the actual conference dates. However, publishing this information solely in SCHED will allow for instantaneous
updates and the greater currency of program information.
- Quantity of information and cost-effectiveness: Our conference program is extensive, thus it will be dense with information and quite bulky. Many attendees have expressed they prefer not to have to carry around a heavy booklet during the conference
week, especially via New York’s public transportation while wearing layers of winter attire. In addition, the 2018 conference in New York is expected to be very well-attended. Given the required volume of hard copies, printing the program will be cost prohibitive.
In considering the commitment to move the program solely to SCHED, the Executive Board and CPAC considered the ease of utilizing SCHED. With SCHED, you’ll be able to:
- View the schedule at-a-glance or look at full descriptions of each session
- Bookmark favorite sessions and personalize your schedule
- Import your personalized schedule using the iCal function
- Use SCHED’s mobile app, which includes offline viewing
- See who is planning to attend each session or event, and plan accordingly
- Utilize built-in social media functions to share information about sessions and events
- Print or download the schedule if you prefer to have your customized schedule in hard copy
In addition, the New York Conference Committee is pleased to offer a webinar later this month to the ARLIS/NA community to provide training and tips in the use of SCHED. An announcement will be sent out shortly.
In making this choice, we move squarely into the 21st century. The Conference Planning Committee and its volunteers will be on hand during the conference to help with any questions regarding the use of SCHED, and we’ll have other tools available at the
registration desk to ease this transition to a paperless program.
All the best to you, and we look forward to seeing you in New York City next month!
Sincerely,
Eumie
