Paid Summer Internship for Graduate Student - The Thomas J. Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

Join a vibrant community of students at The Met this summer!  The Museum Seminar (MuSe) Internship Program awards paid summer and long-term internships to students interested in a career in the arts and fields related to the Met’s many departments. In addition to developing skills through internship projects within museum departments, interns participate in a weekly seminar series and interact directly with the Museum's visitors by leading public tours in the galleries.

The Thomas J. Watson Library is the primary research library of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.  It has a collection of nearly one million volumes, extensive electronic resources and growing digital collections.  For further information regarding The Thomas J. The intern will work with professional librarians and archivists on a joint project with Museum Archives to preserve digital and analog records of 21st century Met special exhibitions. Specific daily tasks will include transferring digital press kit components from physical media into a digital asset management system, scanning of analog materials, creation of descriptive metadata, and MARC cataloging.  Additional responsibilities undertaken as opportunities arise may include processing of other Museum records, reference assistance to Museum staff and non-staff scholars, and historical research. The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a graduate program in library/information science or archives management.  Through the primary project the intern will develop skills in archival/library cataloging and metadata creation, and will gain detailed knowledge of the Museum's recent (21st century) exhibition program.  Additionally, other projects in Watson Library will help provide experience across a broad area of librarianship.

June 4–August 10, 2018

Full time: five days, thirty-five hours per week
Compensation: Approximately $4550 (less applicable taxes and deductions)
