Many of the best sites have paywalls, but educational institutions may have access. ArtStor is great.

A less know source is ARAS (archive for resource in archetypal symbolism) in NYC, 18,000 religious and non-religious images. Researchers can access their extensive picture files, most of them culled from books and magazines and arranged by subject, for free on-site: 28 E 39th St, New York, NY 10016. They also have a subscription database.

Anyone is able to access their images on site at the library, but the electronic database is by subscription.

They have also published two books of their images, which may be available is some art collections:

I have a really basic question about finding art images on the internet.  Do you have any “go to” sites that you send students to when they are looking for images?  The student I am working with is looking for religious icon images from different cultures.
