Freedom of the Presses

Richard and Barbara Basch Gallery
Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center

Ringling College of Art + Design

Open October 20 through December 2, 2017

Freedom of the Presses is a collaborative, multi-site exhibition co-curated by Booklyn, Inc. and members of the Ringling College of Art + Design community. The project focuses on the creative and democratic processes of 21st century independent artist's publishing and offers models of empowering and educational art publishing practices.

The exhibition and reading room at Basch Gallery features artists’ publications at the crossroads of art and social practice from Booklyn, Inc. and the Brizdle-Schoenberg Special Collections Center. Highlights include the Streetopia artists’ book, alternative art fair, and textbook project; performances and publications by Sheryl Oring; and community publishing projects from the multi-generational collective, Mobile Print Power.

A floor-to-ceiling installation at the Special Collections Center shows original prints from the portfolio project Celebrate People’s History/Iraq Veterans Against the War: Ten Years of Fighting for Peace and Justice. The poster series is a joint project of Booklyn Artists Alliance, Civilian-Soldier Alliance, Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative, Iraq Veterans Against the War, and Repetitive Press.

For more information, please see the full schedule of events, including a curators’ panel, book fair, and film screening.
