Overview
This position is responsible for cataloging, collection development, public service, and maintenance of the image collection with specialist responsibilities for the East Asian materials under the general supervision of the Director of Visual Resources, Department of Art and Archaeology. The collections include the teaching and research images of the department. Duties include original cataloging, classification, and subject indexing of images. The incumbent works closely with the faculty to fulfill their image needs for teaching and research. The cataloger works on all aspects of making images available including uploading digital images and data to Shared Shelf and Almagest and supporting users of images in multiple software applications (ARTstor, PowerPoint, Keynote). Technical and support responsibilities include assisting with use of classroom equipment and projection as needed as well as assisting with scanning equipment.
Responsibilities
Research identifying data and enhance cataloging system in order to provide intellectual access to the collections in all formats. Work in English and other languages including Chinese and Japanese. Enter original descriptive cataloging of images into relational Access database (Pictor) using nationally accepted standards and authorities, also creating related object records. Establish authority records according to established procedures. Provide subject access to images. Check and revise older database records.
Research image acquisitions in consultation with the faculty and independently. Research and locate image sources from print materials and commercial image vendors. Monitor quality of digital images and find replacement images when needed to improve quality. Check new requests against holdings to avoid duplication. Monitor order fulfillment and production of images. Export data and digital images into the Shared Shelf and Almagest databases. Maintenance of the collections including processing new images and weeding of digital collections.
Provide support for use of image scanners, image resources, and presentation tools. Classroom and technical support as needed. Assist faculty, students and special borrowers in use of the collections, both analog and digital. Provide support in use of multiple image sources, aggregated collections and presentation software including ARTstor, PowerPoint and Almagest.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
Education
· BA in Art History or equivalent with significant Art History background.
· Coursework in Chinese and Japanese Art History
Specialized training or certification
· Competency with computer hardware and software
· Reading ability in Chinese (and some Japanese)
· Research skills using print and electronic resources

· Ability to work in environment with frequent interuptions
· Ability to take initiative, solve problems and prioritize work effectively

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE PREFERRED
· Masters degree in Art History or library and information science preferred
· Experience in Visual Resources Collection or Library or related facility
· Knowledge of image cataloging standards and practices. Working knowledge of cataloging and classification tools such as VRA core, CCO, Iconclass, Library of Congress, and Getty Institute authority files (AAT, ULAN and TGN), etc. as well as authorities unique to East Asian art.
· Experience with digital classroom equipment
· Strong preference for additional reading ability in Japanese. Reading ability in at least one European language
· Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Office applications, particularly databases.
· Knowledge of digital image technology, photographic processes and ability to evaluate analog and digital image quality
