One of our curatorial staff members has a question about a hard-to-find catalogue essay by Grant Wood, and I wanted to forward it along to see if anyone has any leads. Here's what she wrote: I am compiling the bibliography for the Grant Wood catalogue, and one of the items that Barbara and I would like to include is a preface that Wood wrote for an exhibition by an artist named Arnold Pyle in 1935. The trouble is that it seems to have disappeared over time. There’s no record for anything like it on World Cat and it is absent from existing bibliographies on Wood. The only record of it we can find is in Hazel E. Brown’s book Grant Wood and Marvin Cone: Artists of an Era, p. 59–60, where it is quoted extensively. Unfortunately, Brown’s book comes with neither endnotes nor a bibliography. While she’s not always a reliable source, the extent of the quoting makes us feel like it must exist. Based on what we know about Pyle, we assume that this catalogue was for an exhibition in Cedar Rapids, likely at the Little Gallery, but we can’t be certain. -- I've also checked WorldCat for information about the 1935 Pyle exhibition, to no avail.
