Well, of course I remember Betty, although the last time I saw her (and her husband Gunter?) was at my retirement party in February 2003.  (Attached is a snap of Betty and Gunter at that party.)  Thanks so much for the obituary, which is so very intelligently and sensitively written.  (No wonder I didn’t see her that often—she obviously had many performances to go to and places to travel).  I’ve just realized I don’t know how well she knew Eleanor Hartman, who also left us a short time ago—they were both at the retirement party.  She and Eleanor continued to come to occasional ARLIS meetings after they retired  and I admired them—both were outspoken and had a wonderful sense of humor.  I think they were both early members of the Southern California chapter of ARLIS.  Our community is a little less brilliant today because of their leave-taking.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] Betty Herman died

Dear ARLIS/NA colleagues,

I thought I would share this news about Betty Herman, a former cataloger at UCLA (who focused on very early publications of art books) and at the Getty Research Center, in case some on this list still remember Betty.

Best wishes,

All,

Some of you will remember our colleague Betty Herman, who passed away on May 9th at the age of 94. See her obituary here:

Who knew our Library School had an age limit for students at one time?

One thing I always will remember about Betty Herman was that she drove a little red corvette. Everyone loved this; it was so wonderfully against type. I seem to recall she had vanity plates, too; maybe something bookish. Does anyone remember?

Sounds like she had a very fulfilling and long life. Good for her.

Best,

Vicki
