Why come to North Carolina for the Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management (https://seiworkshop.org/)? Well...

1. Research Triangle - What is it and will I get lost inside of it?

If youre going to join us for SEI this year in Chapel Hill, youll officially be in  the Research Triangle. Find out what it ishere: http://www.rtp.org/about-us/

2. The Food!

SEI sets up shop in a location for 2 years and then we move on. We were in Chapel Hill for SEI 2016 and already got to taste a lot of the local food and can we just say, and the Huff Post agrees, the food is good! This will be your last chance to join us in Chapel Hill for SEI so, come on down! http://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/morning_call/2015/12/huffpost-chapel-hills-one-of-16-cities-to-visit-if.html

3. Support your colleagues in NC!

SEI will be hosted by The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, which has been consistent in reiterating its inclusive anti-discrimination policies.

The state of North Carolina has been in the news for over a year now for its controversial bathroom bill, which is the first bill of its kind passed by a state. As a result of protests and push back, North Carolina now has a different law in place. The new law, HB142, isn’t a complete win for those who support equality in civil rights, but it does completely do away with prescriptive definitions of sexual orientation or gender in state law and the prohibition against using the bathroom of one’s choice which was introduced in HB2.

Many states, institutions, associations and individuals have boycotted traveling to this state for political reasons. Those of us involved in organizing SEI understand this. However, we’d like to bring up a few other points to consider.

You may have reservations about money you spend on SEI going to UNC, which is part of the state government of North Carolina. In fact, the Visual Resources Department in the Department of Art, the Sloane Art Library at UNC as well as the Ackland Museum and School of Information and Library Science are all sponsors of SEI and have given money and resources to support us. SEI registration fees go directly toward paying for the faculty, the food, (which we purchase from local businesses), and the accommodations for the volunteers and faculty of SEI, in addition to other preparations and organizing costs. While you’re in Chapel Hill, consider LGBT-friendly local businesses listed on Turn Out NC’s website: http://turnoutnc.org/lgbt-friendly-businesses/

It is important that we continue to visit these places and patronize these businesses so that the people who are living and working to make these communities just and fair are supported. It’s also important that we continue to connect with our colleagues from near and far, many from UNC and North Carolina.

5 weeks from tomorrow SEI will be happening! If you’d like to bunk in the dorms at $53 per night, those arrangements will need to be made by Friday, May 5. If you’d like to book a room at the Franklin inn, the block group rate of $165 per night can be secured until May 12th. There are a limited number of rooms at that price. An email will be sent to all registered attendees with the booking code.

Read all about SEI at http://seiworkshop.org where you can find our Statement of Inclusivity, info about registering, accommodationscurriculum and much more.

Join us in North Carolina, for all of the above reasons, and make this SEI a great one!
