Call for Participants: ARLIS/NA 2018 Session
Understanding Distinctive, Special, and Archival Collections

Distinctive, special, and archival collections often have value ascribed from their rarity or uniqueness. This session, however, seeks to understand value derived not only from monetary cost but also value as a grouping or assemblage, as an enhancement to research and learning, or based on provenance. These collections might include but are not limited to photographs and other visual resources, art works, graphic novels, recordings, materials, models, manuscripts, digital collections, or books.

We are looking for presenters to discuss projects focused on building, understanding, providing access to, or engaging their community with these types of collections.

Please describe your collection and your project, including goals, outcomes, challenges, and opportunities. Reflect on how your project changed or challenged your perception (or your community's/stakeholders') of the value of your collection. (200-400 words)

Topics to consider:

  *   Defining the boundaries
  * New methodologies, creative solutions, or borrowed methodologies for assessment
  *   Alternative access points
  *   Engagement with collection
  *   Partnerships for collection development
  * Establishing a Special Collections or Archives
