KELLY: She was like an older sister, a buddy. When I was finally able to buy a car, a Volkswagen, we used to drive to the beach a lot together. We talked about poetry and reading and all of that. There were lots of artists down near Coenties
Slip—Bob Rauschenberg and Cy Twombly, who used Rauschenberg’s studio when he got started. This was in the ’50s. Rauschenberg was something of a mentor to him.
